2024 IPNHK (International Poetry Night In Hong Kong), founded by contemporary poet Bei Dao, will be inaugurated on 28 September at the Tai Kwun JC Cube. With the theme of ‘The Margins of The Mother Tongue’, the festival aims to stimulate cross-cultural responses to poetry and sound art, and will run until 1 October.
As one of the most influential international poetry festivals in Asia, IPN 2024 has invited seventeen international poets and other artistic pioneers from other fields, including Syrian poet Adonis and American poet Will Alexander. They will present poetry performances and dialogue programmes in the five host cities of Hong Kong, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Nanjing and Qinhuangdao, and collaborate with local cultural institutions to present an extraordinary diversity of artistic styles.
The improvisational collision of sound art and poetry recitation constitutes an important combination for the festival, which is curated and musically directed by Dickson Dee, a pioneer of contemporary experimental music. Considering music as a conceptual expression of the mother tongue, live artists will create an interactive platform for dynamic dialogue through random elements, redefining the artistic possibilities of poetry, mother tongue interpretation and sound media.
